“Establishing lasting peace is the work of education; all politics can do is keep us out of war.” “Within the child lies the fate of the future. MARIA MONTESSORI.

DR. MARIA MONTESSORI

Much has been written about Dr. Maria Montessori and her life long achievements. So, we do not want to repeat the same. However, in spite of her achievements and increasing popularity of her philosophy and methods, the acceptance of the Montessori method is far from universal. In a way people still are not ready to accept that the children have their own development agenda and the best contribution from adults would be to “follow the child”. Their typical response is

“we have never had Montessori education, and we turned out quite fine, have’nt we ?”

Well, a look around us or watching a news round-up in the TV or newspaper will give us the answer. NO, we have not turned out quite fine. In spite of repeated warnings, we are bringing the human civilization to the brink of crisis from where we will not be able to go back. Human race is at war amongst itself and with the environment; the society is coming apart in its seams. Peace is the healing force that can stop this slide; but all the countries are bent on war, and peace seems to be a faraway dream.

Mahatma Gandhi held the view that “if we wanted everlasting peace on earth, we must start with the children“. The personality of the humans are shaped during their early years, up to the age of seven. The education the children receive during these years will define their personality, and the fate of future generations. The Montessori method of education has been designed to awake all the hidden power in the children and make these virtues an integral part of personality.

This blog is a medium to introduce to the readers various principles and advantages of the Montessori method of education. If it can even arouse the interest and curiosity of its reader to learn more about the Montessori method, this blog would have more than achieved its purpose. We would have taken the first step of the thousand mile journey towards world peace.

We hope you find the articles useful and informative. In case you have any observations, comments or queries, please feel free to leave your feedback in the comments section.

Reproduced below is the first paragraph of the “Translator’s Note” of “THE ABSORBENT MIND” by Maria Montessori :

I should discredit myself if I were to hail this book as the most important (apart from Holy Script) ever to have appeared in human history. Yet, if I were asked to name one of greater moment to man’s future welfare, I could not.

‘We know,’ says the authoress, ‘how to find pearls in the shells of oysters, gold in the mountains and coal in the bowels of the earth, but we are unaware of the spiritual germs, the creative nebulae, that the child hides in himself when he enters this world to renew mankind.’

Who can foresee the end of human progress once man-made science turns round upon itself to work its marvels on the human mind?
